Discussion Questions for pp. 30-86

1. At age 12, Gretel is the proper age for membership in the League of Young Girls, a branch of Hitler's Youth Organization. Why do you think she is not a member, especially since her father is a high-ranking officer in Hitler's army?

2. Bruno asks his father about the people outside their house at Auschwitz. His father answers, "They're not people at all Bruno." (p. 53) Discuss the horror of this attitude. How does his father's statement make Bruno more curious about Out-With?

3. Explain what Bruno's mother means when she says, "We don't have the luxury of thinking." (p. 13) Identify scenes from the novel that Bruno's mother isn't happy about their life at Out-With. Debate whether she is unhappy being away from Berlin, or whether she is angry about her husband's position.

4. Let's try this one again!-- What is it about the house at Out-With that makes Bruno feel "cold and unsafe"? How is this feeling perpetuated as he encounters people like Pavel, Maria, Lt. Kotler, and Shmuel?

Your thoughts?
:)

The book is really good so far! :)

1. This one is hard. I was thinking maybe if Gretel does it, then she'll tell Bruno and Bruno will not like it, and he's too young to understand it. I talked to my dad and suggested that maybe their dad wanted to protect them because if kids didn't do it, they could be killed.
2. Well, Bruno would have a ton of things going through his head. He'd be wondering what kind of "things" there are because his dad says they're not people. He'd also want to go talk to them. He'd probably wonder why they're living at Out-With because of who is out the window. If they're not people, they might be bad.
3. I think she'd be very unhappy about both. Unless she is a strong believer in Hitler, than she might be ok with his job, but it sounds like she doesn't want anyone to know about his job. I'm sure the mom would rater be in Berlin and not have to look at the camps and people.
4. The house would make Bruno feel unsafe because it's new to him. It's not near anyone, but the odd huts and people in the striped clothes. If I had no idea, I would be a little scared.

I liked how Bruno talked to his father, it gives you more about his personality which I was wondering about!

1. I think that Gretel isn't a member because maybe her mother doesn't support the ideas of this group.

Hey I agree! This book is really good so far. I question I feel most confident in answering is when his Mother says "We don't have the luxury of thinking".... (Question 3.) I think what she means by that is that she knows her country and family are being brainwashed by the Nazis and Hitler (The Fury). I also believe that she is not unhappy about leaving Berlin but rather she is unhappy about her Husbands's position.

What do you guys think about the grandma was she right about standing up to her son, and husband? Do you think she will respond to Bruno's letter? What do you think about Brno's relation ship with his father?
