Hot Cocoa Talk!

As much as I have loved the conversations going on under the "Have You Hugged Your Librarian Lately?" post, I suggest we move our talks over here so that we don't have to look through 51 posts. You guys have been wonderful-- let's keep talking!

p.s., if you have time, and you see Kylen( you know, from 6th grade) ask if you can see the story she wrote about Nathan (Palmer), and yes we did get his permission for the story, i think you might enjoy it . and when you read it, dont concentrate on the mistakes, just enjoy the story! if you want a copy, i can give it to you, if you want an autographed copy, give Kylen 2 pieces of gum. hee hee! thank you for your patronige! by the way, the story's call the Evil Side of Nathan Palmer, and it DOES have a happy endig to it! :)

Sorry for checking out on you, Analie!
I've been sick, and we're getting new hardwoods put in our house, so my life has been topsy-turvy. I am standing at my kitchen counter typing on my laptop right now, which is not super-comfortable.

I don't think I've seen Kylen, and if I have I haven't thought to ask for the story... do you think you could just bring me a copy? I would love to read it, for sure. Nathan is a good character for a story. :)

Watership Down is the name of a place of much significance in the story. I'll say no more! You'll just have to read it.

I have to organize my summer reading list, which is an overwhelming proposition to be sure. Do you guys have any suggestions?

:)

oh, and for your summer list, if you havent read the warriors serie, you should read it, being that you have a cat. plus, i'm not sure if you would like it, but the 5 ancestors is a good series that i got from the library, but you might not want to start it untill the end of summer, since the 5 (?) book comes out in Sept. and i'm currently stuck on a hanger and without the other book. have you read teh maximum ride series, it's funny but not all Goodie Goodie Gum Drops and all that. the Max Ride series is James Patterson's more "kid" series, but if your looking for more younge adult/adult stuff try When the Wind Blows/the Lake House series. more adultish, defintely. my mom was fine with me reading it, though, she says as long as i understand it, and i should feel free to ask her about what they are talking about. it has the same concept as the Max R. series, and it's equally funny, but some stuff is defintly younge adult. if you dont like james patterson, try SF Said, or something like that. he wrote Varjack Paw, a cat book, and Varjack Paw, Outlaw, which i havent read yet. also try Lynne Reid Banks, who wrote the Indian in the Cupboard series, ( i recomend that you dont see the movie, it's way off) he also wrote Tiger Tiger, a really good book that i think is simaler to the movie The Two Tigers. also try Lloyd Alexander, who wrote a lot of books, one of my favorites Time Cat. (can you guess what kind of pets i have?) have you read the Gardians of Gahoole? pretty good books, in the begining of the series, i thought is started to drage off during book 7 or 8. one of the 2. okay, you know what, i 'm just going to make a shorter post, with just books,a few will be added.

please see below.

Maximum Ride:... James Patterson- a "flock" of geneticly enhanced kids with avion genes. series
When the Wind Blows James Patterson- another "flock" of avion gened kids, different than the Maximum Ride series. the Lake House is the second book. THIS BOOK IS YOUNGE ADULT!!!
Varjack Paw SF Said- a black cat learns the ways of his ancestors and prowls the streets with his cat friend Varjack Paw, Outlaw is the second book
Lynne Reid Banks...Indian in the Cupboard series, Tiger Tiger
Time Cat Lloyd Alexander- a cat brings his owner along through the treasure of going back in time.
The Gardians of Gahoole... Kathryn Lasky- five owls journey to the great Gahoole Tree, and train to become Gahoole legends.
Avi...the Good Dog, Poppy series
The Sight David Clements Davies- a legend about the two wolves of a black coat and a white coat shake havoke through the Transilvainian forest. second book called Fell. one of my favorite books.

Hmm. My summer reading list is pretty long, so I think I'll just post a 'highlight' list.
1. Buying and re-reading the Twilight Saga. I can't wait until the Eclipse Special Edition comes out! (May 31st) I really really want to read the first chapter of Breaking Dawn, and see the cover art!
2. The Host by Stephenie Meyer. It's supposed to come out today, but I saw it at the grocery store yesterday, so you can definitely get it immediately if you want to. I was a little iffy about it when it was first announced, but after reading some great reviews, some excerpts, and hearing what Stephenie has said about it, I'm really excited!
3. Tsubasa: Resevoir Chronicle volume 17 by CLAMP. This comes out next week, and it's the next volume of one of my favorite manga series. I'm very excited about reading the continued adventures of Syaoran, Sakura, Mogeta, Fai, Kurogane, and Yuko.
4. I really want to read Meg Cabot's latest paranormal-type book, Airhead. It came out very recently, and from the excerpt and reviews I've read, it seems really good. I also need to catch up on the Princess Diaries series. I'm a couple books behind.
5. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. It seriously never gets old. I love it, and will definitely be reading it this summer.
And, those are the highlights. I have a bunch of others on my To Be Read list, but those are the ones I'm looking forward to the most.

Flags of our Fathers is a must read for the summer of 08. It is the incredible tale of one man's journey and how 6 and a half years of improsonment and torture impacted his world view. I don't know if it ranks with community organizing, or being the first lady, but a pretty impressive account!

Anonymous said...

Mr. Mehsling,

i'm pretty sure that my dad read that book, though, it seems a like a book for "older" students. (okay, mostly adults, but you get the picture)

Kira,

where have you been? i havent seen a post from you for days! i didn't know that Stephanie Meyer had another book thats out, what's The Host about, vampires?

cheers, ciao!

Welcome to our conversation, mr. Mehsling! It's great to have you here. Actually, I believe the book you are referring to is "Faith of my Fathers", John McCain's memoir. And while we don't have this particular book in our library, we do have biographies on Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton that you guys can check out. Maybe Mr. Mehsling will donate the McCain one...

Hey Kira!
I bought The Host as well; I'm checking it out for two reasons:
1.)I can read it for a class I'm taking this summer
2.)If it's appropriate, we'll have it in the library next year-- possibly with a YA sticker.
Here's a list of the other books I'm reading for this genre-driven class:
--Battle of the Labyrinth (fantasy)
--Dairy Queen (chick it)
--The Luxe (hist. fiction)
--8th Grade Bites (horror)
--Crackback (boy books)
That, on top of professional reading for another class, should keep me pretty busy until Breaking Dawn comes out!
:)

@ bwam: The Host is a new stand-alone (possible sequels in the future) novel by Stephenie Meyer that's being classified as an adult sci-fi book. It's set in the near future, after a body-snatchers style takeover of the earth by an invading alien species referred to in our language as 'Souls'. If you've read the Animorphs books, think yeerks, but a lot less evil. Actually, the Souls are nearly perfect in every way: kind, considerate, hard-working, honest, caring. In the future, after the takeover, everything is free, and there is universal peace and harmony all over earth. The main characters are Melanie and Wanderer, who end up sharing the same body. Wanderer is an invading Soul who is given Melanie's body to live in. However, to Wanderer's surprise, Melanie doesn't just fade away, like she's supposed to. She stays, and it seems that her love for the two most important people in her life is what's keeping her here: Jared and Jamie (Melanie's younger brother). Melanie starts trying to convince Wanderer to help her find and save Jared and Jamie, who are still in hiding. She succeeds, and they begin the search for them.
I really can't recomend this book enough. Though, I think it deserves its label as an 'adult' book. I wouldn't give it to my younger sister to read. Anyways, I hope that answers your question, bwam.
@ Mr. Mehsling: Wasn't Flags of Our Fathers made into two movies? I think I remember them both being nominees for the Oscars.
@ Mrs. Pulley: I can't wait to hear what you have to say about The Host. I definitely love it as much as the Twilight Saga. I really want to read Battle of the Labyrinth. I watched a web video of Rick Riordan reading part of the first chapter, and I thought the rest of the Olympians series was awesome. Could you build a post for it? I want to hear what people have read it have thought. Dairy Queen is on my list of To Be Read, though I keep putting it off in favor of other books. I've been really interested in reading The Luxe since I first heard about it, but I didn't know we had it until recently! Definitely on the To Be Read list. I read the first chapter of Eight Grade Bites the other day, and now I can't wait to read the rest. I can't really tell if I'll like it or not, but I really like the premise and what I've read of it so far.
I don't think I've heard of Crackback. What's it about?

Sorry, Mrs. P., I haven't been around, but pretend that I've given you a hug on "Hug a Librarian Day".

I haven't had time to read much lately, but I just recently finished "A Northern Light" (Jennifer Donnelly), and now I'm on "A Swift Pure Cry" by Siobhan Dowd. I'll let you know how they go!

Hey Kira!
It's slow going with The Host, but I should be able to pick up the pace now; my husband is out of town for a week, so I get lots of alone time. That's good reading! :) I'm in it, but I'm waiting for it to really hook me. I'll let you know when it happens.

Crackback is going to be an interesting read as it's not my usual type of book. You can read more summary/review at Amazon.com, but it's basically about high school football and the pressure to take steriods--I think! It's a short book that I'll be reading over the summer; if I really like it, I'll definitely post about it when I'm finished.

As far as a post for Percy Jackson...I'm on it! There's an old one, but I don't want anyone to have to flip back to find it.

:)

@ Mrs. Pulley: How far are you in The Host now? Also, when you're done, could you build a post for it? It's been labeled as adult, but I think it's more YA. Kind of on the same level, maturity-wise, as Eclipse.
