Have you hugged your librarian lately? :)

Hiya Rattlers!
I'm bombarding you tonight! Just wanted to let everyone know-- in case you missed it somehow-- that this is NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK (click the title of this post for more info about why we celebrate!), and that TUESDAY is National Library Workers Day, which of course is when we acknowledge the hard work of librarians and other library staff. Which means me. :) I'll settle for you stopping by and saying Happy Day!

since i checked out Life as We Know It, i have been reading it with an open mind. it's a little scary, not as in ghost and goblins, but as in reality scary. it's still a good read, although, i must say, it didnt take around 40 pages to get going, it only took about 20! you can or can not reply to this (very long)comment

cheers!

Okay, there are so many comments here that I'm going to start with the most recent and work my way backwards. Balletrox21, I am so pleased that you have discovered the joys of blogging! I really think it's a great way for us to exchange ideas based on the books we read. I told one of your classes to check out the older posting on the book Boy in the Striped Pajamas; this was a requested forum from a student, and she and a couple other people have been having a long, thoughtful conversation over a great amount of time about the book. Check it out to get a feel for what we can accomplish here.

But I digress a bit, I have not read Just Jane; what is it about? Fever 1793 I've been meaning to read for years but I haven't gotten around to yet. It's on my list! Maybe we should do a post that is just about our all-time favs books... what do you think? That could be fun! I'll kick that one around, so give me feedback on the idea.

i_l!k3_p!3_27-- Welcome to the blog! I'm thinking that based you your comment and knowing how much those books are flying off the shelves, maybe I should set up a post for those books so you guys can discuss them. Since I've not read them, it would be a good learning site for me! I'll set up something this weekend. Thanks for the idea!

Hiya d-lean!
Battle of the Labyrinth is on my radar-- check out the column "Coming to the Library Soon!" to see the complete list of what I know, and book four is there. I can't wait for that, either! I think it comes out in May, so there's a bit of a wait.

We'll have to compare notes on it when we finish reading it!

Hi Analie,
Librarians do not have to learn a 2nd language, necessarily-- there is, however, another degree program that you must complete involving library, mulitmedia and other technology skills, and also management skills. But no Chinese! Je sais un peu Francais, that's about it!

I'm a little late, but I hope you had a great Library Workers Day, Mrs. Pulley, and that you got many hugs. Also, I'd be interested in an all-time faves list, though it'd be really hard to narrow mine down. There's just so many great books out there!
@ lindworm: Have you heard of the band HIM, or His Infernal Majesty? Everytime I hear/read about the His Dark Materials trilogy, or just Phillip Pullman in general, I can't help thinking about them.
@ nate donaldson: I don't really think Naruto manga would be right for a middleschool library. There's a LOT of violence and gore, at least for the younger grades. I'm a fan of it, though, and have been checking it out from the Longmont Public Library. If you can, you should see about going there. The comics and manga are near/next to the Teen section.
@ blue wolves and mushrooms: I read the last chapter of Life as We Knew it the other day, and it completely blew my mind. I have it on my to-be-read list.
@ balletrox21: I was a little reluctant at first to read Fever 1793, but once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. Laurie Halse Anderson is a very talented writer. What's your favorite part of the book?

Mrs. P said...

Hey nate donaldson, mini moose, moctezuma.ramiro, rosiev96 and lindworm!

I'm killing five birds with one stone here; hope you guys don't mind. :)

Nate, I'm looking into the Naruto comics-- I just sat through a presentation about them at Borders, and I'm interested. Kira's comment is a concern, however; I know she reads a lot of manga and graphic novels, so she knows what she's talking about. So we'll see.

Mini moose, I have not read the Gregor books yet, but everyone tells me how good they are! There is actually a posting about them if you want to try to strike up a conversation; it's older, so you'll need to scroll to the bottom of the page and hit "older posts". Give it a shot!

Lindworm, I love the His Dark Materials Trilogy. I thought the movie was very good, also. There's an older posting about these books, too-- take a look and strike up a conversation!

Rosiev96, The Land of Eloyn is not a series I've read yet, but I am interested. Would you like me to set up a post so you can blog about them?

Thanks, everybody! Keep up the blogging!

:)

Hey kira,

An all-time favs list... interesting! Yes, that is a tall order since I like so many genres and age levels and types of writing. I'll have to mull this one over. I can name a few fantasy books right off the top of my head:
1. Watership Down by Adams. LOVED this one since I was a kid.
2. The Blue Sword and Hero and the Crown by McKinley. Even though they're YA, I read them in college and couldn't put them down. Very good!
3. The Harry Potter series. I re-read them straight through every summer. I'll read them again this summer, but will I continue this tradition now that they are all out? I cannot say.
4. Madeline L'Engle books. Take your pick!
5. The Twilight Saga. Did you think I would leave them out? :)

There's a start. I'll continue this later!

:)

mrs. Pulley,

what is Watership Down about, could i read it? i saw it on Mr. Barrnet's Pick during CSAP, so i thought it sounded, um, more war and teen-like. not that i'm against reading about the wars, they make me sad but i believe in learning about our important past.
please reply! (if you find time)

cheers! ciao!

Kira, my favorite part of the book would have to be when, hmmm let's see in the beginning when nobody gets sick that's the happiest part of the book, except for polly how sad the only thing i didn't like is that a character died so soon and we didn't even really know anything about her :(

Anonymous said...

Mrs. Pully, could you start a blog on the clique series books? Those books are so much fun to talk about and I think it'd be a great blog! The new summer collection is coming out and i'm SO excited!!!!!

Hey balletrox217,
I believe you will see that your post is ready for you to write in!

@ balletrox217: My favorite part, I think, is the ending. It's realistic, but happy; not super mushy, though. I also found the real-life aspects of it intriguing. That such a thing could happen and kill so many people, in a relatively modern time, just astounds me. Of course, there are still natural and human-induced disasters happening nowadays, but its still mind-boggling.
@ Mrs. Pulley: I'm not even going to think about my 'All-time favorites'. I could never make the decision, and there are so many books I love, and some I haven't read in a while but remember liking, so of course I'd have to read them again before making the list, but then I'd have to reread all the books I'm thinking about including on the list, just to give them all a fair chance...Yeah. So, instead, three series I really like right this second:
1. 1-800-WHERE-R-YOU series by Meg Cabot (written under a psuedonym).
2. The Twilight saga by Stephenie Meyer.
3. The Hitchhiker's Trilogy (really five books) by Douglas Adams.

Hey bwam,

Watership Down is an epic tale about a rabbit, Hazel, and a few of his friends who are poisoned and blasted out of their warren by humans looking to build more homes. They travel a great distance looking for the perfect place to start a new warren, meeting all sorts of characters along the way. Eventually, they must engage in a great battle to protect their new home from a rival warren that is suspiciously reminescent of Hitler's Germany. It becomes a classic Good vs. Evil fight, and it has an ending that makes me cry every time I read it. :) Actually, the beginning makes me cry, the middle makes me cry, the end...

Yes, it is violent-- I don't think anyone would imagine that wild rabbits' lives are not filled with danger-- but it's such a wonderful, realistic-yet-not tale that I highly recommend it. And it was Mr. Mehsling's pick, not Mr. Barnett's. FYI!

I will give you guys my theories on the trilogy questions--

Douglas Adams obviously had a very quirky sense of humor, and I personally think he never really intended a trilogy. The books are based on a BBC radio show he wrote, and he probably had a pretty good idea that it was not going to be a trilogy. But I'm not sure on this one!

The Uglies books I am almost positive were originally intended to be a trilogy, but the popularity of them was such that Westerfeld decided to write another, sort of "companion" work. Possibly he didn't feel like the story was complete, but I tend to think it had to do with striking while the iron was hot and there was money to be made. I'm a cynic, for sure. :)

Hey mrs.pulley so since you sat through a meeting at borders does that mean your gonna get them? Another book you should try to get is nineth grade slays from the series of The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod by Hether Brewer.

Thanks alot,
