1st page goal-- p.29

Hey Bookies!
For those of you who didn't attend the meeting yesterday (tsk, tsk), we all decided to set the goal low so that you would have the opportunity to do a little background research on WWII/Holocaust. Post questions you have here, and we will try to help each other out. I'll post discussion questions early next week. And plan on coming to the meeting next Thursday. Hint, hint.
Happy Friday, everyone!
:)

All right, there have been a couple of questions about the reading already, so I'll address them here.

First, Jacob asked, "How old is the main character?" I don't have my own copy of the book yet (I checked mine out to one of you!), but as I recall, he's eight years old. That's a good thing to keep in mind as you read his story!

Second, Raven asked, "What is the Fury?" Here, I'll give you a hint and we can talk about it more at next week's meeting: Look up the term FUHRER.

Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, guys. Auschwitz was liberated on this day in 1945 by the Soviet (Russian) army. To find out more about Auschwitz, do a quick Wikipedia search or copy/paste:

http://en.auschwitz.org/h/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=27&Itemid=1

into a new window and check out the info there. After doing a little research, feel free to ask questions here.

I did a little research on the Olympics in 1936 in Berlin. Adolf Hitler was the president at the time in Germany. Hitler only allowed Germans of the Aryan race to participate in the games for Germany. Also during the games there were signs outside tha arenas that would say no Jews and Gypsies.

ok now who is PGIBBS98?????????????????

Raven, I gave you a VERY strong hint as to who The Fury is-- Look up the term FUHRER. And we'll talk Thursday!

PGIBBS98 is Patrick Gibbs, our resident 8th grade senior book club member. :) Thanks for looking that stuff up, Patrick! Can you tell us which American won four gold medals, and why this was so poorly received by Hitler?

Keep the questions/comments/factoids coming, you guys! This is great.

I can tell which american won four gold medals, it was Jesse Owens,a track and field star. Hitler recived this so poorly because he though his people were the best and other races were not good enough to be even classifed as humans.

Bruno is nine, and i finshed all 29 pages very intresting so far.

I agree with Ray, Bruno is very nice I wonder if he will get in trouble a lot in the book. What do you guys in vision there new house to look like?
I kind of imagine the house to be a brown house that's paint is peeling and the bottom of the house rapped in barbed wire and a rickity stair case leading up to the porch and the front door.

Bruno seems like he could be a likeable character but possibly a bit spoiled?

Bruno is actually nine and i have a question, what does Bruno mean when he calls Gretel the "Hopeless Case".

Mrs. C said...

I'm loving the book but I'm apprehensive cause I know how this whole WWII thing goes...

Hey Guys! Im on the blog! I don't have a copy of the boy in the striped pajamas! I was out for an appointment last Thursday so I didn't get to discuss the new book!!!
Im sort of upset bet I know that I will get to read the book as well! I have an urgent question! Mrs. Pulley, do you have an extra copy of the boy in the striped pajamas? Because I don't have a copy and if I don't have a copy I might have to sit this one out! I don't want to! Anyway see you next Thursday!

I like the "How's his life at school" question, Jacob! Let's pose that one during the next round of questions. :)
