Westerfeld's blog!

Hiya Rattlers!
I was just messing around looking at author's websites, and I wanted to strongly urge you Uglies series fans to go to his blog and see what he has to say; it's a highly entertaining look at an author's day-to-day living. It seems a bunch of people sent him pics of their Specials-inspired Halloween costumes (mostly involving elaborate face "tattoos") that are worth perusing. Check it out!

I'm off to a conference in Denver tomorrow and Saturday; hopefully I'll return Monday with some neat-o ideas to share with you. I'll be checking in as time allows, but with me or without me, do carry on your conversations. I love your chatting!

Are they that good? I haven't read any of the books but I see many people reading them. The titles and front covers creep me out to much. I know they say that you don't judge a book by it's cover but you know, I usually not creeped out by this book!

Hi soccergirl23!
Sorry it took me so long to respond; it's been a crazy week. The books are fun brain candy-- they aren't going to change the world or anything, but they are entertaining, for sure. The latest one is getting mixed reviews, but I finished it quickly and found it amusing! They really aren't creepy at all, I don't think... does anyone out there find them creepy?

Is this a series for guys as well? I heard it was just for girls, but they sound interesting.

Hi anonymous,

That's a really good question! When I've booktalked this series to classes, I've encouraged guys to read them, too. The ones who have really enjoyed them, but I think it's a hard sell due to the cover art. Very girlie. The fact that there is a female protagonist telling the story first person doesn't help. However, the ideas presented and the action involved will interest guys as well as girls, so I really wish they hadn't limited the presentation of the books (mostly by cover art) to girls. I say, slap a paper bag over the cover and read away!

Birch, where are you? I know you've read and enjoyed these books-- back me up here!

I would be interested to hear what you think about Extras, Analie-- I liked it! I think it's an interesting commentary on today's celebrity-crazy culture where Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and the like are all people seem to really be interested in.

If you give it a go, let me know!
