Reading Goal #1 Discussion Questions
Hey Bookies,
Post your answers to the following questions, and let's talk about this amazing book!
1. What do you learn in chapter 1 about Maycomb, Atticus Finch and his family?
2. What do you think of the way Atticus treats Walter Cunningham? What do you think Scout learns from Walter's visit?
3. Atticus says that you never really understand a person "until you climb into his skin and walk around in it". What does this mean? Is it an easy thing for Scout to learn?
4. When the children plan to send a letter to the person who leaves the gifts, they are prevented. How does this happen? Who does it, and why might he do so?
5. How well does Atticus feel he should defend Tom Robinson? Is it usual for (white) lawyers to do their best for black clients in Alabama at this time?
6. In chapter 10, Atticus tells his children that "it's a sin to kill a mockingbird". What reason does he give for saying this?

Hello? Anyone out there? Anyone reading this book? Post answers here! Post questions as well!
1. Maycomb is a quiet and small town. Atticus is a lawyer and Scout's real name is Jean Louise. They do not have a mother, but they have a house keeper.
2. Atticus treats him very nicely. He talks about farming which Walter loves to talk about.
3. It's whenyou step in the persons shoes and learn what they're experiencing.
4 the hole in the tree was covered with cement so they couldn't send the note. Mr. Radley does it because he says the tree is dying, but it's not true.
6. It is a sin to kill a mockingbird because they sing pretty songs and it doesn't do anything to crops.
1.You learn that Maycomb was an town that was at one point connected to Finch landing because the Finches have lived there. You also learn that the town is very small and secluded. Then you learn that Atticus is one of three children and that he left Finch landing to study law in Montgomery.
Then settled in Maycomb to begin his practice. You learn that Scout's full name is Jean Louise Finch and that Jem's is Jeremy Atticus Finch.
2.Atticus treats Walter Cunningham with the respect he woudl give any other person. He doesn't treat him any different because he is a Cunningham. I think that Scout learns that because someone is different outside your house inside they are still your guest and you should treat them as an equal.
3.Atticus means that by saying you don't know a person until you put yourself into their shoes.Which means you should look at someones life from their perspective. I think that this will be hard for scout to learn because she has amind of her own and she wants to only do things her way.
4. Well the letter they wanted to leave a note but Mr. Radely funds it so he fills in the hole with cement. Boo Radley i believe leaves it I don't believe it actually says who does. But I believe that Boo left it so that people could see some of the things he like and maybe make them happy.
5. Atticus believes he should his best to defend Mr. Robinson because he thinks that all men are created equal. Through that belief he believes all men deserve equal defense. To answer the next part no it is not common for white lawyers to defend the black people to the best of their ability. This is because they thaught that they were more important than balck people. Because of that belief they also believed blacks were generally wrong.
6. The reason he gives for saying this is that Mocking birds didn't do anything to ruin peoples stuff they just sang for people and made them happy. So people believed it was a sin to kill them.
