Inkheart Book Club Begins!

And so we embark on a new adventure! Alas, however, I have no book, so I will be behind you guys unless I can get to the library tonight (highly unlikely). All right, bookies-- my new nickname for you-- let's read to p. 204, chapter 20 entitled "Snakes and Thorns" by the end of break. Is that good with everyone? And let's try to post comments periodically when we read something interesting, confusing, wonderful, etc. :)

And also, let's welcome Jamia to the club; she's got a book and hopefully she'll be posting soon.

Happy holidays to one and all!

Book Club News

All right, after a bit of delay, I now have my copy of the book. :) I think we said we'd try to get halfway by mid-week at some point this week; that would put us on page 130, chapter 14. Could we do that by Wednesday? If so, could you guys come in a little early for a discussion? It's a late-start day, so we could get together at say 10:00-10:15 and have a nice, relaxed meeting. I'll start the book tonight, and it shouldn't be a problem to crank it out. I read pretty fast!

Let me know ASAP if you can come in Wednesday at 10:15. If someone can't make it, we'll reschedule for a better time.

Thanks everyone!
:)

Alex Rider!

I had a request from Raptor to set up a discussion area for the Alex Rider books which I was happy to do. So, who has read these and what do you think of them?! I personally have not read them yet, but I have them on my list. :) It's a long list, you know. Anyway, I found this this cool website that is dedicated to Alex Rider along with a pretty extensive author website that I will also add to the author area below.

Question: Did anyone see the movie version of Stormbreaker?

Are You Ready for the New Moon Movie?!

Hey Twilight Fans!
I know, I know-- Twilight is still in the theaters and I'm already pushing the sequel. I'll not deny the fact that I found Twilight the movie a bit disappointing; with no budget, those special effects suffered, didn't they? And that would be why I'm looking forward to the sequel! Hopefully the studio will see the benefits to giving the creators more money... here's to wishing, anyway. While trying to glean some info about New Moon, I stumbled upon this cool blog that is dedicated to all things New Moon Movie and such-- click here to find out the latest and greatest about the progress of bringing the story to the big screen. There are also cool pics of Volterra, Italy and footage of Tyler Lautner (Jacob) participating in a martial arts competition.

So here are my questions about this-- How do you think they will get Edward more into the New Moon story (I can't imagine they will let a sequel go by without having Rob Pattinson front and center, do you?)? Also, who has been on Meyer's website and read Midnight Sun (if you haven't, you really should!)?

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series!

Okay folks,
Karin-Chan requested a post to discuss The Percy Jackson books, so here you go! Also, I was cruising Rick Riordan's site to see if there was any info about when #5 might be coming out, and while I didn't find anything like that, I did find a recommended reading list from Mr. Riordan himself to keep you entertained while you wait. Click here to see what books he recommends, and please note that Hunger Games is on there, which is one of our newbies that I've been telling you all about. Check it out!

So, what do we think of Percy and his adventures? And how about this, if you were the son or daughter of a Greek god, which one would be your parent and why?

Book Club Meeting Tomorrow!

Hi guys!
Okay, so I think we're in agreement to meet tomorrow during the second half of lunch. Why don't we all head up to the library @ noon:10? That give us 50ish minutes of lunch and 30ish minutes to discuss the book. Sound good? Hopefully I'll have enough copies of Born to Rock to get us all started before Thanksgiving-- I believe I will.

All right, so as a first comment to this post I will add questions to lead our discussion tomorrow. Read them over and have ideas about what you want to discuss. I'm looking forward to it!

Twilight Trivia!

This is added as a comment in the For Twilight Fans post below, but I thought it deserved its own post:
It's time for me to throw some trivia out there to get everyone fired up for the movie! Answer me these questions three:

1. What science lab is Bella participating in when she passes out and has to be taken to the nurse?
2. What sport are the Cullens very fond of?
3. What is James' gift? How does it affect Bella and Edward?

Early winners get a Twilight prize!

Gordon Korman Book Club-- Book II

Hey guys,
We actually don't even have this book in our library (I am rectifying that right now), but I am interested in reading Born to Rock next if you're game. A teacher recommended it to me last summer, and I totally forgot about it. :) Oops. Anyway, click on the title hyperlinked above, and let's take a vote.

The Countdown Begins!

For Twilight Fans!

Hi all you Meyerites!
It is almost here... the Twilight movie comes out this weekend, and if you haven't visited it in a while, you really should check out Stephenie Meyer's website (linked here) to get fully caught up on all things Twilight. Also, if you haven't heard, Borders had a movie release party last night that I didn't make it to--but I hope you did! Check this page out to see behind-the-scenes footage of the movie and all sorts of other cool stuff to get you ready for this weekend.

So, the question is... how many times do you think you'll go see Twilight over Thanksgiving break? Hmm...

Schooled Book Club--Discussion Questions for first meeting!

Here's some talking points for tomorrow morning, guys; let's be thinking about responses for the following:

1. Explain the type of life Cap has been leading at Garland. How is his life about to change dramatically? Have you ever daydreamed about being homeschooled? What do you think it would be like?
2. Where does Cap land while his grandmother, Rain, recovers? What do you think would be the most difficult thing to understand about middle school life?
3. How is Cap treated by Sophie, Zach, Hugh, and Naomi? How do people decide whether to be cruel or kind to someone who is new? Do you blame Sophie for her reaction to him? Would you want Cap to be living in your house?
4. Hugh realizes that if it weren’t for Cap he would be low man on the totem pole. “Better him than me.” (p.30) Do you think this is a theme of middle school? Do students put up with bullying a lot because they’re afraid it might be them next?
5. What prank does Zach plan for Cap? Do you think this could happen at your own school? Why do people go along with it? In your opinion who is worse- Zach or Naomi? Why?
6. Cap is full of hippie wisdom like “When you’re unkind to others, it’s usually because you don’t believe that you, yourself, deserve kindness.” (p.46) Do you agree with this statement? What about his other philosophical statements?
7. What is the turning point event for Cap that changes how people perceive him at school? Have you ever known someone who acted heroically?
8. Why does Hugh think, “I was a worm, but at least I had the strength of character to be ashamed of it.” (p. 75) Does Zach realize that he’s being a worm too?

See you at 8:00 sharp-- I promise!

SCHOOLED book club is on like donkey kong!

All right, so far there is five of us-- Nathan, Rachael, Analie and Garrison (you still want in, right, Analie?), which is plenty to start a book club in my opinion! If anyone out there is still interested, come see me! I'm in the process of gathering copies right now so we can get reading over the weekend. I'm excited to get some of his books under my belt so I'll be ready to talk with him when he visits; maybe we can roll through this one and get one or two more read before December 11th when he's here in person! Incidentally, here is a clip of him on YouTube discussing Swindle; I couldn't get it to load today, but maybe you'll have better luck from home. Enjoy!
Thanks guys--

Gordon Korman Book Club

I am so sorry, my Rattler Readers!
I have been a super-lame blogger, haven't I? Well, I am back on the job, I promise. :) So, what's new? What are you guys reading right now? I am about to start Brisingr--Anton was kind enough to lend me a copy because ours are perpetually checked out!--but other than that it's been adult books for me lately. Time for some YA!

I was going to see who wanted to be in a book club to read some of Gordon Korman's stuff, but all of the 6th and 7th grade teachers checked out all of my copies to read in class! So, if you are in a class with Prodanovich, Thibault or Butler, you will probably be reading No More Dead Dogs or Schooled very soon. :) If you are not in one of their classes, how would you like to do a book club read of Schooled with me? Comment and let me know!

Gotta run-- thanks for being patient with me!

The 39 Clues Is Here!

Hiya Rattlers!

You may have noticed that I've been MIA (missing in action) some this week; well, it was all for a good cause. I got to meet Mr. Rick Riordan, author of The Lightning Thief and the first book in The 39 Clues series, .A Maze of Bones. This is an ambitious undertaking by the publishing company Scholastic. They had Riordan write the first book and the series outline, but nine other authors will be continuing the story. Are you ready for the coolest part? Gordan Korman, the author that will be visiting us in mid-December, is the author of the second book in the series, and it will be published on 12/2! This is amazing luck for us; we will have a first-rate author here plugging a brand-new book! I am very excited. Okay, click here to join in The 39 Clues hunt, and click here to find out about Gordan Korman's 39 Clues book, One False Note.

There are flyers in the library detailing how The 39 Clues works, but it is a multimedia series combining reading the books, and online game and collectible cards that all provide clues that could lead to prizes! Check out the flyer when you're in the library. Oh, and the books are HERE AND READY TO GO! Check out your copy today, but please remember to put all six clue cards back in the book before you return it. Thanks!

That's it for today, but that's a lot, isn't it?

So Much Going On!

Hi Rattler Readers!
Sorry I haven't posted in a while, but getting the library up and running and training our small army of parent volunteers has kept me busy lately.

There's a lot to discuss! #1 is the upcoming, right-around-the-corner release of Brisingr, the third (BUT NOT LAST) release in the Inheritance series, following Eragon and Eldest. Have you read this books? Are you excited?!! I need to go back and reread the first two because it's been a while. If you're interested in joining me, look for the Inheritance display on the north wall of the library and check a copy out!

#2 is a Twilight update. The movie has been moved up; the release date is now right around Thanksgiving! Did you guys know that? And speaking of, did we like Breaking Dawn? What did we think? I'm curious to know where you guys are on this one... I have mixed emotions, myself.

#3 is our author visit in December! Gordon Korman, author of Swindle, Schooled, No More Dead Dogs, the Everest, Island, and Dive series among others will be coming to Altona to speak to the grade levels. I am very excited about Altona's first-ever author visit! I'm thinking maybe we should set up book clubs and read his books to get prepared. For those of you who haven't read his stuff, he is a fun-- and funny-- author.

I think that's it for now. Comment away, people! Let's get this blog rolling again!

:)

Welcome Back, Rattlers!

Are you guys ready to cruise Altona's halls again? I hope so, because tomorrow is the day! In honor of the occasion, I have turned on my comment moderation option; this means that your comments will be emailed to me first, and then I'll decide if they are appropriate for posting or not. I'm not expecting problems, but... :)

Other news: While you are welcome to come on into the library, I won't be open for business for a while. Can't say how long-- it depends on how quickly my aides and I get everything set up and ready to go. It took me all day just to get the periodicals back on the shelves! I've got some great helpers, though, so I am hoping by next week. Speaking of the magazines, we've got some new ones this year, so you guys should check them out when you can.

I guess that's all I've got for now; my brain is tired after a full day at school. Teachers get that way too, you know!

Summertime Talk! Post III

Well here we are... the waning days of summer. You're probably thinking I'm getting ahead of myself, but I've got a lot of work-related stuff coming up in the weeks ahead, so to me I'm staring down the barrel of the school year. :) Oh well. C'est la vie.

I've checked out three more books from the library-- 9th Grade Slays, The Off Season, and The Thirteenth Tale-- but I'm only counting on finishing one of them before it's time for Breaking Dawn. I am very excited to see how Stephenie Meyer wraps up this story! I also recently stumbled across a new trailer for the Twilight movie-- have you seen it yet? If not, click here to check it out. It's very action-packed!

Sounds like you guys are doing well and enjoying your summer... keep it up and stay in touch!

It's almost time for Stephenie Meyer's latest installment in the Twilight Saga! Our local Borders Bookstore has a few different activities going on to get you revved up and ready to go, including a midnight release party that Yours Truly is planning on attending. Who's with me?! Click here for more details on discussion groups and the party itself. Who's rereading the series to get ready, I wonder?

The old post was getting full and not in prime position, so I decided to open another one for any chatting. I hope you guys are fully enjoying your days right now; I know I am! Anything going on you'd like to share? Any good books you've read? I just finished Dairy Queen which I really, really enjoyed-- I need to get up to the library to pick up the sequel.

Anyway, Happy Hot Days-- they're right around the corner!

Stephenie Meyer Is Coming to Town!--REPOST

Hey Twilight Fans!

Some of you missed this, and it was requested that I repost this. The author of The Twilight Saga and The Host will be hitting Denver in support of her novel, The Host. Her website states that her touring in support of Breaking Dawn will be very limited (if at all), so if you want to see her, this is it. Click here to get all the info!

:)
Mrs. P

I've Finished The Host :)

I really got rolling on this one after a couple hundred pages! Here's the summary I wrote for a online YA lit class I'm taking over the summer:
"This book is being touted as Stephenie Meyer's first book for adults, but it is also being promoted in YA circles (see her website and MySpace sites!). I therefore wanted to read it and see if it is appropriate for middle school libraries, which minus a smattering of higher-level vocabulary and a couple of PG-13 love scenes, it is perfectly fine for all secondary collections. If you labeled the Twilight books YA, this one would be as well, but it is not controversial. I suggest getting a few copies!

The book opens with the introduction of our narrator, a parasitic alien named Wanderer, who is one of the peaceful Souls that deliberately have taken over Earth. Though she has lived eight different lifetimes on eight different planets, she is ill prepared for the intense emotions and vivid memories that her new host, a human named Melanie Stryder, saddles her with. Melanie is a resistance fighter-- strong in body and mind-- who refuses to vacate the premises as she should, and she battles Wanderer for consciousness in a most literal sense. Wanderer finds herself experiencing and then assuming as her own Melanie's two great loves, her little brother Jamie and fellow rebel Jared. Along with this, she also has to deal with a growing hatred of the Seeker, a sort of alien FBI person, who is suspicious that Wanderer is not in control of her mind.

Stephenie Meyer's books all revolve around the theme of choice, and The Host is no different; Wanderer's new emotions coupled with Melanie's memories lead her to make crucial decisions that turn her away from the calm, logical Souls and headlong into the confusing and violent world of humanity."

We'll have copies of this in the library in the fall! Kira-- and everyone else-- feel free to discuss!

Okay, I lied a little-- I told bwam that I would have this post up and ready to go over last weekend, and for that I apologize. Here it is, though! Blue Balliet's Books!

This WILL be my last post of the day! Nathan requested this one in which to discuss Chasing Vermeer and The Wright 3, two fast-paced art mysteries which sound similar to The Da Vinci Code (but less adult!). Any Sonnenblick fans out there? If so, click on the title of this post to see his tour calendar which comes through Denver on Tuesday May 20th! I just started reading this book; his other works include Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie and Notes from a Midnight Driver. Hi Rattlers!
balletrox217 requested a forum to hold a Clique discussion, so here you go. I am feeling like a bad librarian since I haven't read these either, but I will hopefully get many books read over the summer. I hope. :) Anyway, I as always look forward to hearing what you guys have to say about these books, and FYI-- I have the first of the summer collection-- Massie, I think?-- down at cataloging. It MIGHT be here before Friday, but probably you'll have to wait until August to get your hands on it. We'll see!

Olive's Ocean

Hello Rattlers!
I had a request from maddie toretto to create a post for this book. I have not read it yet, but it's on my list, especially after hearing it's one of maddie's favorites! Here is a synopsis I pulled off the author's website:

"Olive Barstow was in Martha Boyle's class until she was killed by a hit-and-run driver while riding her bicycle. Martha didn't know Olive-not really. But after Olive's mother gives her a section from Olive's journal, Martha knows they could have been, would have been friends.
And now Martha and her family are going to visit Godbee, Martha's grandmother, on Cape Cod for the rest of the summer-as they do every year. The Boyles descend on Godbee's small house in a flurry of exuberance, mini-crises, diapers, and humor all mixed together. The ocean is still there. And the five Manning boys still live next door. There is Jimmy Manning with his ever-present video camera. Jimmy Manning, who gives Martha her first kiss. And Tate, who seems to follow Martha with his eyes. And then there is Olive, who had always wanted to see the ocean, and who now haunts Martha's thoughts and dreams."
Sounds very interesting! Maddie, what would you like to add?

Have you hugged your librarian lately? :)

Hiya Rattlers!
I'm bombarding you tonight! Just wanted to let everyone know-- in case you missed it somehow-- that this is NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK (click the title of this post for more info about why we celebrate!), and that TUESDAY is National Library Workers Day, which of course is when we acknowledge the hard work of librarians and other library staff. Which means me. :) I'll settle for you stopping by and saying Happy Day!

Twilight Update!

Sorry so long, Rattlers!
It's pretty busy in the library right now, but I did want to share the latest and greatest that's going on with the Twilight movie. Production is in full swing, and it's very exciting! Click here to see an Entertainment Tonight behind-the-scenes clip of the filming-- you'll get to see them filming the part when Edward saves Bella from certain death the first time and the last time! Also, check this out to see MTV interviews with the cast and director discussing their experiences with filming this juggernaut of a series.

If anyone knows anything, comment and let us all know! I don't have much time to research these days, you know.

Code Talker Book Club-- Forum III

To get ourselves reacquainted with the story (and start the conversation now-- I changed my mind about that!), answer the following questions with THOUGHTFUL answers:

1. Ned survives both the hardship of boarding school and the trauma of war. How is
Ned able to get through these difficulties? Which of his personal qualities do you
think helped him most during his trials?

2. In Code Talker, the character Ned Begay is telling his grandchildren the story of
his time spent as a Marine in World War II. How do you think Ned’s
grandchildren would feel about their grandfather after hearing about his
experiences? How would you feel if he was your grandfather? What do you think is the most important lesson that Ned’s grandchildren might learn from his story?

Blog away, people!

Code Talker Book Club Update

Hi folks,
It has been really difficult to get a good time nailed down to meet, hasn't it? CSAP has really cramped our style, and now that I am flying solo in the library, my time is going to be even more at a premium. But I want to wrap up this book; it was a good read and it deserves a good discussion! Could we maybe meet Friday morning at 8:05? And then we'll post to the blog and hopefully the LHS folks will join us?

Let me know if you think that will work!

Code Talker-- Forum II

Hi book club folks!
Sorry it has been sketchy getting the actual talking going; it's been kind of busy in the library lately. Below I've listed four different questions for us to discuss in this forum. Post your answers as comments, and let's chat!

1. On the sign in front of Ned’s mission school is the motto: “Tradition is the enemy
of progress” (p. 23). What does this motto mean to the teachers of the mission
school?

2. How would you describe the teaching methods and classroom styles of Ned’s
teachers in the boarding school? What do you think of the methods Ned’s teachers
use, both to teach and to discipline their students?

3. Throughout his time in training and in service as a code talker, Ned carries a
pouch of corn pollen with him. What does this pouch mean to Ned, and how does
he use it?

4. Ned mentions that the Japanese army does not follow the “rules of modern
warfare” (p. 168). List three examples that support Ned’s statement.

For my kiddos, we can't meet face-to-face Friday as originally planned; I'll actually be out of town Friday and Monday. Why don't we utilize this discussion space now and plan on reading pp. 196 to the end of the book by next Friday, 3/14? I'll read on the plane and be all caught up! And for any LHS kiddos joining us, welcome! We really look forward to hearing from you-- and your librarian!-- on this post. Let's discuss this really interesting book!

Requested Forum-- Boy in the Striped Pajamas

Hey Rattlers!
I had a request from monkygrrl to provide a forum for a discussion of this book. It is a fictional tale set during the Holocaust, but the story is told to us from a very unique perspective-- through the eyes of Bruno, a nine-year-old son of a Nazi Commander. Due to the youth and innocence of Bruno, you may have a lot of questions about what's going on, and the who, and the where, etc.! I would be more than happy to field questions. Also, the reviews I read stated this book for grades 9 and up, so it's not for the younger readers, even though the language may seem like it is.

I also wanted to share that this book has already been optioned into a movie! You can check out the current information here. It's got the actor who played Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter movies as Bruno's father (I think that's who he is playing, anyway!)!

Anyone read it? Monkygrrl, I hope you jump in the conversation soon!

Mrs. Meester, the librarian at Longmont High, would like to do a book club with you guys after reading this book. I've checked our copy out; as soon as her kiddos finish reading their set, she's going to send them along to me. Who's interested in joining? The title is hyperlinked to Amazon.com's info on the book so you can check it out. Some of you may know that there is also a movie based on this novel (isn't there always?). Comment and let me know if this sounds like something you would be interested in!
